Radiology Quality Improvement Programme awarded for ‘Best Improvement In Patient Safety’ at IMSTA Awards 2015

12th October 2015: Dublin: McKesson and HSE’s collaboration to improve quality and enhance patient care has been recognised for delivering the ‘Best Improvement in Patient Safety’ at the recent IMSTA MedTech Awards 2015.

Launched in 2010, the Radiology QI Programme is the first national programme of its kind and is sponsored by the Quality Improvement Division of the Health Service Executive (HSE).  It is led by the Faculty of Radiologists, RCSI, with the programme managed by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI).  The central aim of the Radiology QI Programme is to improve qualityby helping providers enhance patient care and patient safety with timely, accurate and complete radiology diagnoses and reports.

In September 2013, the Conserus Quality Workflow Solution from McKesson was selected to provide the ICT solution to support the implementation of the National QI Programme, helping radiologists turn what had largely been a manual and paper-based process into an automated and seamless electronic workflow. The implementation of Conserus as a national ICT system will enable Ireland to set intelligent national targets for radiology departments to drive improvements.  Additionally, the system will track and facilitate consults between physicians, including the identification and tracking of specific critical, urgent and significant findings and the time-sensitive transmission of these reports to other consultants. By converting findings into an electronic format, physicians will be able to share results with colleagues while mapping statistical trends.  Additionally, the National QI Programme plans to create targets for quality metrics for the most common QI workflows including Radiology Quality Improvement meeting management, peer review and critical results communications.

Dr. Anthony Ryan, Consultant Interventional Radiologist, UHW and Chair of the Faculty of Radiologists QA/PCS committee and of the Radiology working group of the National QI programme, has been impressed with Conserus: “The software is excellent, its use fitting seamlessly into our workflow. From a patient care perspective, it allows us to document our reviews of each other’s work and discuss differences of Radiological opinion that could potentially alter a patient’s management. The ability to issue and track ‘alerts’, and relay critical results to other Consultants immediately is a further key patient care feature.”

Once fully live in 2016, the solution will be deployed at 50 of the nation’s hospitals as a fully national system.  This will make Ireland the only country in the world to have a national quality programme for Radiology.

Michael Fenlon, Executive Director International Operations, McKesson, commented: “This is the second year running that McKesson has received an award from IMSTA for improving patient safety. Last year we were delighted to be awarded jointly with the HSE for the NIMIS programme. Winning this award therefore also marks the extension of a longstanding relationship between the Irish Health Service and McKesson, and it is testament to the importance of developing and delivering software and systems that enable true interoperability. This has huge significance in helping to improve quality, enhance patient safety, and support the delivery of healthcare today.”

CEO of IMSTA Justin Carty said, “The awards are designed to recognise the contribution innovation and innovative companies make in health care delivery. This is our fourth year, and the event keeps growing and getting better.”
